When it comes to planning your reception, booking the venue is only the beginning! It’s easy to get bogged down in details so setting priorities is important.
First Impressions Count
Your décor will be the first thing that strikes your guests’ eyes. Make sure to work with the venue organizers to set up separate areas for cocktails and appetizers, dining and dancing the night away. The object is to create a smooth flow throughout the day or evening. It’s also important to have designated areas where people can get away from the action to rest now and then.
Food, Fabulous Food
When it comes to the wedding experience, outstanding food ranks number one in importance with most guests. Schedule some tastings as soon as possible with the caterer. Consider including some trendy alternatives or add-ons to a sit-down dinner. Among the latest are creative food and drink food stations. Make your own martini or gourmet coffee, or tacos or sushi, anyone?
The Art of Placement
Once you know how many people will attend, make sure the venue can accommodate them easily without crowding. Next, work on the seating chart, as it’s very important. Think genial conversations over dinner, and avoiding potential confrontation. Seat people next to people they get along with or who are roughly the same age and have similar interests. If children attend, they will appreciate a space dedicated to them, with perhaps a babysitter and place for a nap.
Keep Them Entertained
Make sure you have a great band or DJ who can get your guests dancing the night away, and that they have something planned for break periods. And do go over the playlist, making sure it’s appropriate for the crowd. Also plan some surprises, like salsa dancers, magician or other entertainment, throughout the evening.
Saying Goodbye
Give your guests a wedding favour that will be as memorable as their experience on your big day. Think take-home treat from a candy or pastry bar, a plant used in the centrepieces, meaningful item stamped with both your initials—the only limit is your imagination! If your reception ends with a big dance party, some comfy slippers or flip-flops might be a welcome parting gift.
Go with a full-service venue with the expertise to provide options to accommodate you and your guests throughout the evening, from first cocktails to midnight snack.
