The classic proposal scenario: The future groom has excitedly gone engagement ring shopping on his own. He falls to one knee, and then delights his beloved by presenting a dazzling diamond engagement ring as he pops the question. They later go ring shopping together for plain bands to exchange during the wedding ceremony.
There’s no doubting the romantic appeal of this approach, and why it will never go entirely out of fashion. But getting the engagement ring right—shopping for the one that will be a perfect fit for her finger and lifestyle—takes some research and planning.
RING SHOPPING STYLES
Today, some Montreal couples opt to shop à deux for both the engagement ring and the wedding bands! It’s a practical solution, as no guy can know the fiancée’s tastes as well as she does.
Another modern approach presents a compromise. A promise ring or plain engagement band is presented at the proposal. The bride-to-be then gets to shop for her own “real” engagement ring herself. At the same time, the couple can select their wedding bands.
However if you’re a guy looking to surprise your intended, here are a few tips before you go engagement ring shopping:
- Without being too obvious, listen up whenever your future fiancee speaks about jewelry. You may also find that she pins or posts helpful hints about her ring preferences online.
- Ask her closest and most style-conscious girlfriend for some pointers. Hopefully, she’ll volunteer to help you shop.
- Pump your married friends for info and read up on the subject. Diamonds have certain distinguishing characteristics such as color, clarity, carat weight and cut. The better educated you are about the world of diamond rings, the more likely you are to make a wise choice.
